SSN PROOF DOCUMENT NO LONGER NEEDED

REAL ID Application Process Simplified Even More!

Because of a recent change in a federal rule, Californians applying for a REAL ID from the DMV no longer need to provide a Social Security card or W-2 document to prove they have a Social Security number. As of May 19, Californians now simply need to provide their Social Security number on their online application.

After filling out the online application and uploading the remaining required documents, you will get a confirmation code. Bring that confirmation code and the documents to a DMV office at your earliest convenience, This can even be on the same day, for express service. No appointment is necessary. Applicants are required to wear face coverings and maintain the required 6 feet of physical distance during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency.

When you get to a service window, it will take less than 10 minutes to complete the REAL ID transaction.  To complete the application for a REAL ID, you will be need a valid Social Security number, proof of identity and two proofs of California residency. If you need to find out what documents qualify as the necessary proof,  information can be found at REALID.dmv.ca.gov.

Remember, beginning May 3, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require a valid passport or other federally approved document, like a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card, to board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities and military bases.

By making the process easier, the hope is that a majority of applicants will complete their applications early, so crowds caused by a last minute rush can be avoided.
