REAL ID UPDATE - DEADLINE EXTENDED!

REAL ID DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL 5/20203!  Great news for procrastinators! Due to the impending volumes of expected REAL ID applicants still unregistered, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security extends the enforcement date from October 1, 2021 to May 3, 2023.  That means until May 2023, you will not be required to produce a REAL ID or valid passport to enter a federal building or board an airplane.

And although that should help alleviate some of the long lines at the DMV in 2021, you are still urged to apply for your REAL ID as soon as possible. The DMV has been working on streamlining the procedure. As mentioned in our last post, it's best to start the process online. The DMV says that once you do that, the actual time you will need to spend at a window at your DMV office will be 10 minutes or less.

Remember, to apply for a REAL ID, Californians must actually visit a DMV office and provide:

  • One qualifying proof of identity – original or certified (examples: valid passport, birth certificate). NOTE: a legal name change document(s) is required if your name on the proof of identity is different from the name on the other documents (examples: marriage certificate, adoption papers)

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Two proofs of California residency – paper copies (examples: utility bill, bank statement)
Visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov for a complete list of acceptable documents and a link to the online application.
