READY...SET...GO! FOR LABOR DAY SAVINGS

The Labor Day season is traditionally thought of as the end of summer. But buyers who want to save big know it's also a perfect time to get behind the wheel of a new car. According to Experian, “The week before Labor Day is a triple opportunity for bargain-conscious car shoppers.” It taps into traditional sweet spots for vehicle savings:

  • The final days of the month, when dealers who are trying to meet sales goals are typically more open than usual to price negotiations
  • Three-day holiday weekends, when dealerships traditionally mark down their inventory to attract customers with an extra shopping day at their disposal.
  • And best of all, by Labor Day, the car manufacturers are starting to unveil the next year car models so dealerships are motivated to clear their current inventory. To make room for 2021 models, 2020 models (and in some cases, even 2019 models) which are still brand-new and under full manufacturer warranty are now priced to move.

So although Labor Day is the end of summer, it is the beginning of the super-competitive end of year car selling season. It’s true you can wait later, and as the year ends, the prices may come down lower. But that’s also a big gamble. Many experienced consumers know about Labor Day Savings, so they will be in as soon as possible to grab the biggest deals on the most popular, in demand vehicles. They know to get the colors, accessories and features they want, they need to act fast. Waiting longer can end up with buyers looking at inventories lacking in the vehicles they really want, and if you end up buying a vehicle you don’t want, that’s isn’t really the bargain you were looking for.

Used cars are also priced to move during this period. Dealerships want to get rid of as much inventory as possible before year-end to keep their financials healthy. But they know that with the build-up of new vehicle sales during September through December, they will be getting in a lot of trade-in inventory. So, even if you aren’t looking at a new vehicle, it’s a great time to buy that low-mileage pre-owned model as well. Again, make sure you don’t wait too long. As mentioned, dealerships are well incented to get rid of as much used inventory by December 31st, so they will be extra-generous with pricing.
