"OUT MOTORSPORTS" FOR LGBT+ GEARHEADS!
Are you a motorsports enthusiast? Check out “Out Motorsports” (https://www.outmotorsports.com/). “Out Motorsports” is an automotive community by and for LGBT+ car enthusiasts and motorsports competitors and their allies. It presently consists of more than 100 gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and queer car enthusiasts.
This community covers a broad range of topics and include several automotive subcultures. These include motorsports, new and used vehicle reviews, industry trends, EVs, towing, and overlanding. However, the primary purpose of “Out Motorsports’” content is to increase the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in motorsports and the automotive industry.
The complex intersection of LGBTQ+ and gearhead identities may be difficult to navigate in a world that’s dominated by straight, cisgender, older white men. “Out Motorsports” provides resources and events to create opportunities for the queer community in the motorsport world.
Identity should not matter in motorsports, but it clearly still does. Therefore, the founders of “Out Motorsports” believe visibility is an important and powerful thing. “Out Motorsports” chooses to assist members to race, participate in autocross, go to track days, join a rally, or go to motorsports media events as their authentic, true selves.
Their position is not that they are doing something different for the queer community. Their goal is to create an event hosted by people who identify as something other than cis straight white guy, and actively targeting similar people first. But they also welcome cis straight white guys to their events to create an environment of camaraderie between diverse members of the motorsport enthusiast community. “Out Motorsports” leaders estimate that in 2021, one quarter to one third of the drivers who participated in their events were straight, cisgender.
Currently, “Out Motorsports” is actively seeking new members. Membership allows access to secure discussion spaces and invitations to virtual events that connect the group to each other and industry professionals. They also welcome story contributions and are building their roster of regular contributors.
Of course, some of the most popular activities sponsored by “Out Motorsports” are their trackcross events. During, these events you are asked to bring any car, such as your daily driver, track car, or you can buy a $1,500 car to join the Cheap Car Challenge to the track for a day of on-track and autocross activities. There are several different classes, and each Cheap Car Challenge has a different theme.
And this year, to further expand the inclusivity of its events,“Out Motorsports” is offering a limited number of scholarships to two of their events to help some participants whose financial status may otherwise prevent them from attending. Find out more about these scholarships in this article on Jalopnik by Elizabeth Blackstock by CLICKING HERE.
