BEAT THE DEADLINE FOR THE CALIFORNIA REAL ID

Important Deadline News:  As of October, you will need a REAL ID in you wish to board a plane for a domestic flight without a passport, or if you want to enter a federal building.  You can find out more information about the REAL ID requirement by visiting the Department of Homeland Security HERE.

The deadline for getting a REAL ID is October 1, 2021.  The California DMV expects close to a million Californians will apply for a REAL ID in August and another million will apply in September as the deadline nears. Since getting a REAL ID requires that you visit a DMV office in person, you can expect long lines and longer wait times.

So, we strongly suggest that you don’t wait till then to get your REAL ID. The REAL ID process must be completed at a DMV office, but fortunately parts of the process can be accomplished in advance, online. This includes certifying documents necessary to apply for the ID and will end up saving you significant time to complete your application.

To apply for a REAL ID, you must provide your full name, date of birth, and documents such as an unexpired passport, a copy of your birth certificate, or an unexpired permanent resident card, your Social Security number, and two documents that show that you live in California, such as a rental or lease agreement, a home utility bill or employment documents.

Remember:  All applicants for a REAL ID driver’s license and/or identification card must submit proof of their Social Security number (unless they aren’t eligible for Social Security). DMV electronically verifies your Social Security Number and your birth date with the Social Security Administration while you are in the DMV office.
