MORE CAL DMV LEARNER'S PERMITS ARE EXTENDED

The latest extension to driver's license deadlines in California apply to driver’s license permits with expiration dates that run through May 31, 2021. This gives student drivers in the state more time during the COVID-19 pandemic to finish any prerequisites needed for obtaining a provisional license, including the requirement of taking fifty hours of supervised driving practice with an eligible licensed driver, along with six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a driving school.

With this announcement, all eligible permits are now extended an additional  six months after the current date of expiration, or for a maximum of 24 months from the initial date of application, whichever is earlier. The DMV previously extended permits expiring between March 1 and November 30, 2020 and this announcement expands the change to all permits from November 30, 2020 through May 31, 2021. The DMV has notified all California law enforcement of these extensions, and there is no individual action on the part of drivers that is required.

Please note, that the DMV resumed behind-the-wheel drive tests with new health and safety protocols on June 26, and appointments to take the test are available.

Commercial learner’s permits expiring between March and December have been extended through December 31, 2020, to align with federal guidelines.

Here is a summary of current driver's license extensions.
